Unruly Gentlemen is a west coast apparel company. It sells travel accessories, phone cases and wallets.
I spent the month of August building Unruly Gentlemen.
I built Unruly Gentlemen because I thought the name sounded amazing.
I didn’t know who my target market was nor did I know much about what I was selling.
I am into the 2nd week of testing and I’ve concluded I need to pivot from Unruly Gentlemen.
I don’t know anything about fashion, nor do I know how to be unruly or a gentlemen.
I also don’t have much experience with e-commerce and internet marketing at the moment.
This journey is already hard and I am making it harder by operating in a niche I have no experience in.
Let’s face it, no one has ever accused me of being a good dresser.
What I do know is that there are already established international players with world class teams competing in this space.
To give myself the best chance of winning I need to begin by operating in my area of expertise.
I am a level two sea kayak instructor, my passion is surfing and I love camping and riding bikes.
My area of expertise is in the outdoors. I have expedition experience as well as a vast knowledge of outdoor gear.
I dream of travelling to remote beaches and surfing in line ups of my best friends.
To do anything not related to this is to neglect my true abilities.
So once again, I’ve come full circle, too…
It’s the business I started building 3 years ago.
This summer I built two websites that are the culmination of everything I have learnt about building websites.
I began building the day I quit my job as a carpenter apprentice.
Both are e-commerce websites. Sweet Asian Flavor sells the pictures I took on my 3 month trip in southeast Asia last winter as canvases using Printful.
Unruly Gentlemen drop ships bags, phone cases and wallets using Oberlo and Aliexpress.
1000 Epics will replace Unruly Gentlemen as my e-commerce experiment and it will integrate the lessons I’ve learnt from Sweet Asian Flavor and Unruly Gentlemen.
Changes will start to roll out this week.
Pivoting to 1000 Epics is also more inline with my values of adventure and travel and my goal of getting barrelled at Skeleton Bay.
I’ve realised, that in the short run, this will cause my time to first order to increase.
But, in the long run, I feel the overall increase in enthusiasm, knowledge and credibility expressed in this pivot will improve my long term revenue.
